About us

Seemia Theatre are an award-winning international ensemble
led by Iranian Director Sara Amini.

Seemia was originally established in 2012 by Artistic Director Sara Amini and performer Maryam Davari. In October 2015 following 8 months of training with acclaimed Polish theatre company, Song of the Goat, Seemia reformed as a new ensemble, with our current ensemble of artists from Iran, Argentina and the UK. From ancient Persian, Seemia translates as ‘
Casting a spell with words;’ as an ensemble we aim to create work that is truly spell-binding.

Seemia’s devising style fuses Polish laboratory theatre practices, traditional British script-writing and Persian storytelling. We believe in theatre as a tool to break barriers
and through socially-engaged devised performances we endeavour to bring communities together.

Our productions have been performed across the UK and Internationally with highlights such as Arcola
, Kampala International Theatre Festival, and Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Our plays have been
featured on
BBC World Service, nominated for Amnesty International’s Freedom of Expression Award and
won Summerhall’s
Lustrum Award.

Our outreach ranges from; drumming workshops for community, panel discussions at TEDx, visiting lectures & workshops for drama schools in UK & Iran, and we are currently a Mentor for Internationales Theater Institut, Berlin.

In 2017, we were selected to be mentored by Tangled Feet under their Emerging Ensemble programme, funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. We are one of the six Barbican Open Lab 2022 companies.

Our new production started in residency as part of Barbican’s Open Lab 2022, working with Katie Mitchell. TAKE ON THIS is a bold investigation of terrorism and prejudice in a time of media manipulation, blending our signature devising style with Audio Visuals and a bespoke app.
